Netflix’s Moonrise: Who messaged Jack in the finale?

In the final scene of Moonrise Season 1, Jack receives a message on his device that makes him gasp and then smile. This happens after Jacob Shadow’s speech about the Moon being governed by its citizens and the crowd chanting “Moonrise!” The show doesn’t tell us who sent this message, but we can look at the most likely candidates based on what we’ve seen in the show.

Phil might be the one who sent the message. He surrendered himself earlier and told Jack, “I leave the new world in your hands.” Even though Phil is absent during the “three months later” part of the finale, he could still be alive and checking in on Jack. The message might be Phil letting Jack know he’s okay or giving him some information about what’s happening elsewhere.

Mary is another possibility. She appears with Jack in Copernicus City, but she’s still recovering from what happened with L-Zone. The message could be about her health or maybe memories that have come back to her. Jack cares deeply about Mary, so a message from or about her would explain his emotional reaction.

Rhys could also be the sender. After accidentally shooting Mary, Rhys was clearly upset. We don’t see him in the scenes that take place three months later, except for his conversation with Clemenza where he talks about “moving on somehow.” The message might be from Rhys telling Jack what he’s doing now or sharing news about Earth.

Wise Crowne is seen standing behind Jacob during his speech. Wise says the events are “the prologue to our next chapter,” showing he’s involved in what’s happening on the Moon. The message could be from Wise sharing additional information with Jack about what’s coming next or giving him instructions.

Someone from Earth might also have sent the message. With the Joint Army disbanded and Earth described as being in “an era of great chaos,” it’s possible that someone from Jack’s old command structure is reaching out to him. This could be with news, a warning, or a request for help.

The timing of the message is important to think about. It comes right after the new government on the Moon is announced. This suggests the message might be related to these changes. It could be confirming that certain plans are working out or warning about problems that might arise.

Jack’s reaction to the message gives us clues too. He looks surprised at first, which means he didn’t expect the message or the information in it. But then he smiles, which tells us it’s probably good news or from someone he’s happy to hear from. This rules out messages that would make him worried or upset.

The message probably connects to the themes of change and new beginnings that we see in the finale. It likely relates to what’s next for the Moon’s independence or reveals something about the conflict between Earth and the Moon that we didn’t know before.

The SEED technology and butterflies shown in the finale might also be relevant. If this technology can be used for communication, the message might not be from a person at all but from a system or artificial intelligence connected to SEED.

The message arrives after Jacob talks about his “new vengeance,” so it might be related to this mission. If Jack and Jacob are working together, the message could be information about resources, allies, or intelligence that helps their cause.

Whoever sent the message, it shows us that the story isn’t over. Even though L-Zone was defeated and the Moon now has self-governance, there are still many questions to be answered. The message reminds viewers that Jack will continue to be important in whatever happens next.

This final moment works well as a cliffhanger for the season. It tells us that while one part of the story has ended, there’s much more to come. The mystery of who messaged Jack isn’t just an unanswered question—it’s a promise that Moonrise has more stories to tell. When we find out who sent the message, it will likely be important for the future of the Moon and possibly Earth too.

Looking at all the evidence, Phil seems the most likely sender. His relationship with Jack developed significantly throughout the season, and he entrusted Jack with continuing his work. A message from Phil would bring the season full circle and set up interesting possibilities for Season 2. However, the show deliberately left this open-ended, allowing for any of these possibilities—or something completely unexpected—to be revealed when the show returns.
